“If you don’t like the way the world is, you change it. You have an obligation to change it. You just do it one step at a time.”
– Marian Wright Edelman
Are you ready to take the first step toward the life you want?
The prep:
Grab a piece of paper and a pen. Take a deep breath. We are going on a short journey.
The place we are going is the world where anything is possible, and you are capable of doing anything. This is the place where you don’t have to worry about taking care of others.
Take a deep breath.
This is a place where you don’t have to justify your wants and needs – there is nobody to tell you if you are ‘right’ or not. There is no judgment about what you want here. This is also a place where we see beneath the surface of things.
We know that our true want isn’t to have piles of money laying around (although that would be fun), but it is what that money allows us to do that is our true want. It is the feeling beneath what we would do with all that money that is what we need.
This isn’t about losing as much weight as you want, it is about how you would act and interact differently if you didn’t have that weight holding you down.
This isn’t about quitting your job, but it is about what you feel like you should be doing deep down inside yourself.
Take a deep breath.
The first step:
Now that you are in this different place – write down what it is that you want. Write down what you really want deep down inside.
Then write down what is beneath that want. How are you different if you get what you want? What is the deep need that this want would serve?
Now, look at what you wrote down. Is it written as a positive (I want to get ‘x’) or a negative (I don’t want to be ‘x’). If it is stated as a negative – reword it to be stated as a positive.
It’s a simple step, but it isn’t always easy.
What to do next:
For now – take the piece of paper and fold it up. Put it somewhere safe. Pat yourself on the back, and know that by simply writing down with complete honesty what it is that you want and need you have taken the first step towards the life you want. Let the back of your brain chew on it for a little while. Then you can take the next step.
