Here’s some food for thought: every behavior you have, both good and bad, does serve or did serve a meaningful and useful purpose in your life. EVERY. ONE. OF. THEM. Maybe they kept you safe in a crazy situation, maybe they prevented you from getting overwhelmed, or helped you to stay motivated.
Identifying what the purpose of a behavior is/was, especially when that behavior is one you are trying to change, is a huge step towards being able to create a plan for change that is likely to truly work.
This is part of the ‘I’ in NAIL – investigating why we are the way we are. It’s sometimes hard to do, but almost always worthwhile. So look at a behavior in yourself that you wish would change – what purpose did it serve in your life? How much of that purpose is still useful in your current life? What do you think that means?
